100th Anniversary of the Mystic River Bascule Bridge
It doesn’t matter how many times I’ve seen the bridge go up or down since I landed here in 1993. I still stop what I’m doing, listen, and watch. There is something about this mechanical marvel that people both near and far find fascinating. For me, it’s one of the few times that everything rests, if not for just a moment, apart from a few boats floating by.
Many will say that the bridge connects local communities, specifically the towns of Groton and Stonington that share its space. Others will say it is one of the best reasons we all share Mystic. Both are right…Mystic has always been a special place, more of a feeling than an actual location, where Beluga whales and African penguins live together…where tall ships recount nautical history…and where a bridge set in the center of a bustling downtown connects people from all over the world.
The bridge has stood the test of time and has borne witness to events with both local and national significance. Shown below are just some of the ways we celebrated the bridge this past fall.
I’ll see you at the bridge…
